December 24, 1979, was when Afghanistan became known as the democratic republic of Afghanistan under the influence of communist government. This new way did not settle well with the people. The rebels became known as “ Mujahideen” who were aggravated with the new government because it went against the muslim religion. Afghanistan became weak when the president was killed by hafizullah Amin, took control. Amin Worried the Soviets that he was talking to the United states leading to him being prosecuted placing a soviet leader in charge.
The Mujahideen was not done. With their religion and homes on the line they never did stutter when war broke out. With the greatest advantage being the battle field was on the side of the people. Being at war for ten years the soviets began to look weak for they have no real purpose of destruction on afghanistan's land. Though land is what is helps keep the people protected and upper hand. This sign of weakness enabled the ability of the soviet union being pressured to sign the SALT treaty given by the united nations. Before officially signing and calling of troops on february 15, 1989; the Soviet leader attempts to give one last push to quickly end the war making it worse for them in the end. In 1988 with the previous feeling of failure and shame The Union realized the troops put into the war cost them and damaged the economy.
After the War one million people from Afghanistan died. Due to the war close to 5 million civilians fled the country moving to Pakistan or Iraq. When all was finished with the Soviets Afghanistan a third world country.
