Suez Crisis - Isabella T.
When Gamal Abdel Nasser was announced new leader of Egypt one of his first action plans is to create the Aswan Dam. Needing help to pay for the creating of the new dam America gave a loan, hoping to spread government support and gain an ally. All seemed smoothed until until the U.S. withdrew their loan due to conflicts with the soviets. Nasser and Egypt were furious and betrayed.
Needing a new way of encountering money quick and easy, Nasser took control of the Suez Canal. A man made passageway from the Europe to the middle east or india that is 120 miles in length and 670 feet in width. With their new power Egypt charged all travelers in order to now pay for the new canal soon to be built. With enemies Great Britain, France, and Israel this new accomplishment was the perfect time to start a riot. These three enemies with despises created a plan of trickery on Egypt. Israel attacked then Britain and France came and tried to calmed the situation. Though It was not that easy Egypt did not give up without a fight. Irritated their opponents bombed Egypt ending the crisis.
This event during the cold war was important due to the fact that the U.S. and the Soviet Union for the first time where on equal terms. Both wanted the canal opened. Now 59 years later the canal is opened today.
